The continuum of training

As I look back at my own training over the years, as well as the training others have received from me, several things are of paramount importance. Whether it was in martial arts, military, or strength & conditioning, two of the most important things were:
  • basic techniques
  • consistent training
I have not trained people all my life, but I have trained others for several decades.
These two things have always insured good, solid progress in all areas of fitness and skill.
When the basics are truly ingrained in an athlete, and consistent training has built a very solid foundation of conditioning, the possibilities for that athlete can be almost endless.

The reverse of that is also true, which brings me to my main point.

I routinely delete memberships at my gym, not due to lack of payment, rather due to lack of training consistency. No one can "casually" train at my gym.
Anyone who just doesn't feel like training for a couple of weeks is automatically dropped from membership; and they are barred from returning in the future.
Any unexplained absence for two weeks is an automatic drop.
Is that harsh? You bet!
If a person is gone due to an emergency or some other situation they have no control over, like military deployments, of course they can can  come back.

That is one way we keep the training standards high and retain only the most dedicated athletes.
I place a high value on the people I train, that is why I keep my numbers small.
While most gyms are trying to pack in the most members possible, we go the opposite direction.
We don't want the most members, only the most dedicated ones!
