Building a stronger version of CrossFit
I've been involved with CrossFit since 2005, and I know it develops great conditioning, however, there is a trend I've noticed in recent years concerning not enough focus on absolute strength.
At my gym, CrossFit Gulf Coast aka the Cave, we know that strength drives everything else, it's just that simple.
Our main focus is building absolute strength through correct technique being taught, diligent program design, adequate recovery, and a clear focus on safety.
I don't care how fast you can do something wrong!
If you can't deadlift, squat, bench press, and shoulder press sizeable loads, you don't have a good strength base.
Concerning body weight, if you can't do a respectable number of strict pull-ups, something is wrong.
All those things are addressed at the Cave.
Choose carefully where you train.

Great way to kick-start your training
I just finished a great workout which I recommend you try!
It is super sets of barbell shoulder presses and pull-ups
X 7/6/5/4/3/2/1/2/3/4/5/6/7 reps
Rest about 30 to 60 seconds between sets

Calling all beach bums
We are thrilled to be having our 2nd Annual Beach Bum Fitness Challenge!
Last we had an absolute blast! This year will be even better!
It's been called "crazy fun in the name of fitness", and probably with good reason.
We will be some very innovative and challenging things both in the water and on the beach. We will have two-person teams for each part of the challenge.
Of course, safety is always a primary focus at out events (if you train with us already, you know that VERY well).
Medical & liability waivers will be required. We recommend that you be in reasonably good health and be 18 years old or more to participate.
If you haven't had a physical exam in the last year, it would be a great idea to get one before this extremely fun event takes place.
So, bring a friend, your family, a cooler with non-alcoholic drinks & some munchies, a camera, and beach chair if you'd like.
Come and hang out with the CrossFit community, some of the most fun people in Sarasota!
Time: 8:00am-10:30am
Location: Lido Beach (by the volley ball net)
Recommended equipment: aquatic footwear, sun glasses, & athletic clothing
Contact: Frank DiMeo, owner of CrossFit Gulf Coast cell ph 941-228-8341
****We will coordinating volunteers to help with beach clean-up/sea bird rescue if the oil spill does make it to our beach****

A true hero passed away tonight
My Dad, Capt. Fiore C. DiMeo, USMC, Ret., completed his final mission tonight, at 90 years of age.
A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, he was no stranger to tough fighting.
His final battle was against multiple enemies: congestive heart failure, prostate cancer, pneumonia, & kidney failure.
He fought well, as you would expect from a Marine with 28 years of service.
I was blessed to be at is side when he took his final breath tonight.
Semper Fi, Dad!
